A Retro Revival

Fashion designers have long loved drawing inspiration from bygone eras, and the greatest hair gurus are no exception. In fact, when it comes to fall hair trends, we've spotted more retro-inspired hairstyles showing up on the runways than ever before. Propelling the past-perfect hairstyle movement into the spotlight, the fall shows offered a parade of provocative coifs to play upon, but with an all-too-important twist that keeps things from looking kitschy.

At Dior, the short, '30s-inspired waves recalled the Old Hollywood glamour of Jean Harlow, while models at Fendi rocked a badass pompadour that was equal parts pinup girl and rockabilly princess. The teased tresses at Nina Ricci straddled '60s mod and ladylike elegance, Louis Vuitton delivered a polished '50s vibe, and Chloé channeled Faye Dunaway's bouncy '70s blowout in the 1976 film Network. Luckily, you don't have to jump in your time machine to learn how to copy our top retro picks. In fact, we've consulted some tress experts on how-to tips and tools you'll need to rewind the clock on five of fall's coolest new-old 'dos.

Top Hair Tips

No matter what your hair woe—frizz, flatness, grey roots, oiliness, or dandruff—it only takes five simple moves to get gorgeous hair.

Frizz is as common as humidity in August. But with these tips, it doesn't have to be.

1. STAY HYDRATED. Frizz occurs when dry hair absorbs water from the air, but cream-based moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can prevent it—just be sure to rinse well so hair doesn't look dull or greasy. And lather up only a few times a week: "The natural oils that accumulate in the meantime are good frizz-fighters," says hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins.

2. DRY THE RIGHT WAY. To keep waves smooth, apply styling lotion to damp hair, then let it air-dry—and resist the urge to tousle. "The more you put your hands through it, the more likely you are to create frizz," says hairstylist Garren. To make straight hair sleek, point the dryer toward the ends— "going against the grain, even a little, can cause frizz," he says. And keep blow-drying until every bit of dampness is gone.

3. COAT WITH CAUTION. Use silicone drops or spray to combat frizz, but don't overdose. Apply a drop or spritz to your palms first, then rub them together and pat them over frizz, starting at the ends and working toward the crown (you can always add more later).

4. OIL WELL. To further ward off frizz, give your hair a twice-weekly oil treatment (pros like jojoba oil). Work about a tablespoon through dry hair, first with your hands, then with a synthetic-bristle paddle brush (boar bristles would just soak up the oil). Leave it on for as long as possible before shampooing as usual; even five to ten minutes helps.

5. CUT AND COLOUR CORRECTLY. Avoid over-lathering, which makes short pieces stick out and get fuzzy. If you have coarse or curly hair, stay away from razor cuts, as they rough up the cuticle and exacerbate frizz. By contrast, nearly blunt cuts can help weigh down frizz. As for colour, steer clear of a full head of highlights or a solid blonde: "Bleaching deteriorates the outer layer of the hair, making it coarser and frizzier," says Hawkins.

Blow dry your hair with a Ferrari...

The Conair-owned BaByliss brand has teamed up with sports car maker Ferrari to create a new blow dryer, the Volare.

The blow dryer incorporates a ball bearing design to reduce friction and vibration and is made with real Ferrari parts which means it has 2,000 watts of power and can run for 2,000 hours.
Most hair dryers only run for about 500 to 700 hours.
The Volare is also lightweight and includes a turbo boost button to rev up airflow by 12 percent.

However, there are two downsides to the hair dryer, the obvious being the price as it retails for about $400! But even if you wanted to spend the money, good luck as it’s only available for use by professionals in hair salons.

Now, when will regular consumers get to purchase one???

Our team of hairstylists, makeup artist and photographer are lead by a director, to come together with a concept and then the image developed and created.

This, in case you haven't been keeping up with British models (and who can?), is Agyness Deyn. There's something unusual about this adorable lady: she has short hair!

Most models have heaping, malleable hair that can be morphed into a shape complimentary to what they are wearing. For the most part, they have long hair. They are playing by the rules.

Agyness? Not so much. This brave 25 year old is sporting short hair and it totally works for her! I'd go so far as to say she looks iconic, in an irreverent way. She doesn't remind me of Audrey Hepburn inRoman Holiday or Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby. She sort of reminds me of Andy Warhol.

Bounce from city to cottage with head-turning curls!

Take a cue from the spring runways and free yourself from the straightening iron. Big, bouncy curls are in!
So, whether you're strolling the city streets or dockside at the cottage, there's no need to tame your waves.

Use product When hair is still wet (not dripping), apply small amounts of gel consistently through the hair.

Comb hair "A defined curl is a group of hair that curls together smoothly; frizz is a result of individual hair that does its own thing. To create definition, comb one-inch panels of hair with a wide-toothed comb. Try "The Bone Comb," an orange wide-toothed comb that has perfect spacing between the teeth for curls .

Twist curls Most people with curly hair are wavy in the front and curlier in the back. To work with this, take two to 10 groupings of hair from the top of your head and wrap each around your finger in a direction away from your face. This will improve consistency greatly.

A simple test to determine your hair's health!!!

Extremely damaged hair is not hard to spot. The symptoms are obvious: it feels dry and porous, tangles easily, and will make an awful crunching sound when rolled between your fingertips. But slightly damaged hair is not as easy to diagnose, unless you know this little trick. If you're not sure of your own hair's health, then it's a really handy little diagnostic technique.

As for repairing the damage? "To revive your hair, the follicle has to be moisturized," . "An overnight treatment or leave-in product will infuse your hair with the right ingredients to protect and nourish it so you wake up in the morning with soft, supple tresses. Plus, don't underestimate the positive effects of eating well, drinking enough water and getting lots of rest - your skin and hair will glow!"

We also suggests applying a small amount of olive oil to the tips, letting it soak in for an hour, then washing and drying your hair as normal in order to obtain "a glittering sheen."

But of course, hair repairs will only go so far, and if your hair is really sinking deep into that bowl or glass of water then you will have to face the fact that your hair needs a proper trim. Maintaining your hair's health through a good diet, gentle handling, the right products and by reducing heat styling, it will help make "at damage feeling" much less regular occurrence.

Straight traces

Do you prefer straight hair? Well, I have fantastic news for you: classic straight traces are very "IT" this year!

Parted in the middle, this hair style looks even more fabulous!

Wash your hair, preferable give it a moisturizing treatment before styling. Air dry it well, make sure there are no damp hairs what so ever, otherwise you will make a major damage while straightening it. Then spray some heat protection on it and get to work with your hair straighteners.

First, split your parting down the middle, but try to keep it shallow. Then straighten the hair in small strips, so that the hair is more heated and likely to stay straight for longer. Work your way from the back of the head to the front, and from the bottom to the top. Take your time.

Make sure you put the same pressure on the straightener all the way when you pull it through your hair, don't linger on one strand if you do not want to damage your hair. And make sure your straightener temperatures set on minimum, so that your hair doesn't get fried. When you are done, put a little bit of a leave-in moisturizer (or oil) in your palm, brush your hand through your hair.

GET THE LOOK: The key to this updated classic is tons of texture and volume. Start with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, then add a texturizing cream to damp locks before loosely blow-drying. To add a bit of height, use a bristled brush and lightly backcomb face-framing sections before sweeping hair up into a loose ponytail at mid-height, says Joseph Saikaley, Ottawa-based celebrity hairstylist and artist director for Byblos Salon. Divide your pony into thick sections and wrap each around the base, pinning every few inches. Make sure to alternate directions and tuck the ends in. To get that casual, slightly imperfect look, try this trick from Hanson: make circular motions with your palms over any areas where you want softness, like around your face and ears. “Rub it up just a tiny bit so there’s that nice spring.”

Frizzy Hair

Frizz is as common as humidity in August. But with these tips, it doesn't have to be.

1. STAY HYDRATED. Frizz occurs when dry hair absorbs water from the air, but cream-based moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can prevent it—just be sure to rinse well so hair doesn't look dull or greasy. And lather up only a few times a week: "The natural oils that accumulate in the meantime are good frizz-fighters," says hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins.

2. DRY THE RIGHT WAY. To keep waves smooth, apply styling lotion to damp hair, then let it air-dry—and resist the urge to tousle. "The more you put your hands through it, the more likely you are to create frizz," says hairstylist Garren. To make straight hair sleek, point the dryer toward the ends— "going against the grain, even a little, can cause frizz," he says. And keep blow-drying until every bit of dampness is gone.

3. COAT WITH CAUTION. Use silicone drops or spray to combat frizz, but don't overdose. Apply a drop or spritz to your palms first, then rub them together and pat them over frizz, starting at the ends and working toward the crown (you can always add more later).

4. OIL WELL. To further ward off frizz, give your hair a twice-weekly oil treatment (pros like jojoba oil). Work about a tablespoon through dry hair, first with your hands, then with a synthetic-bristle paddle brush (boar bristles would just soak up the oil). Leave it on for as long as possible before shampooing as usual; even five to ten minutes helps.

5. CUT AND COLOR CORRECTLY. Avoid overlayering, which makes short pieces stick out and get fuzzy. If you have coarse or curly hair, stay away from razor cuts, as they rough up the cuticle and exacerbate frizz. By contrast, nearly blunt cuts can help weigh down frizz.

Oh, and use a blow dryer to direct the hair while combing/lifting with your fingers.

You can give your hair a great shine and help remove soap build up!

Blondes - Add a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice to your rinse water.

Brunettes and Redheads - Add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your rinse water.

Stir one teaspoon of honey into four cups (one quart) warm water. After shampooing, pour the mixture through your hair. Do not rinse out.

Dry as normal.

SUMMER TOUSLED HAIR = natural & sexy

Tousled hair is a great hairstyle for summer. The tousled-hair look gives a woman that natural feeling about her, like she didn't try too hard. It fits well into summer, because it seems to represent a more carefree style that comes with summertime. Although tousled hair may look like you are all-natural and it took nothing to do, for some people tousled hair is not an easy style to achieve.

Here is how you can achieve the tousled hair look for your perfect summer style.

The first step in getting tousled hair is to wash you hair. If you try the tousled hair look with dirty hair, it may look like you just rolled out of bed instead of a carefree, sexy look. Be sure that you use a conditioner on your hair also to make your locks healthy and shiny.

One of the key steps for getting tousled hair is the blow-drying of your hair. This is a critical step in the process of getting tousled hair and is were many times the style goes wrong. Before you blow-dry your hair, you can add a hair product like an anti-frizz serum or a shine serum to help your hairstyle along. Next, tip your head over and blow-dry your hair upside down as you use your fingers to scrunch your waves into your hair. Once your hair is completely dry or almost dry all over, flip your head back over.

Next, add a flexible hold gel or mousse to your hair, again using our fingers to scrunch waves and loose curls into your hair. Be sure to not add too much product and to thoroughly work it through for the roots down to the tips of the hair. Don't play with your too much, as you may cause the tousled waves to become frizzy or undone.

If you have completely straight hair that will not get waves in it when scrunched, then you may want to use a large barrel curling iron or hot rollers to get a wave in your hair. Just be sure that you pull the curls apart with your fingers so they look like tousled waves and not actual curls.
With tousled hair, you can choose to wear it completely down around your face or you can pin part of it back. If you are going to a summer barbecue or picnic, you may want to take the top part of your hair and use small clips or bobby pins to pin it back out of your face. A cute idea for a summer hairstyle is tousled hair with a cute flower tucked behind your ear

Dealing with split ends

Once your hair has split, the damage is done and will require cutting. So protect it by keeping it supple and moisturized. Use a leave-in conditioner.

Blow drying the hair can damage it, so always use a nozzle on your hairdryer concentrating on the hair shaft. If the damage has already been done, a serum applied to split ends will help disguise them and can help protect the hair when applying direct heat such as from curling tongs or heated rollers. The only real solution is to cut the offending ends off.

Are you in need of a new hairdresser? Have you recently moved to a new area, or has your hairdresser moved away? Then this article provides information about what to look for when choosing a new hair salon!

1. You should always inquire as to whether the salon offers a free initial consultation. This is important especially when visiting the salon for the first time. If you loved the service you received on your first visit then I am sure you will book to go back. Upon your second appointment a consultation with your hairdresser should again form part of your appointment. Your requirements and wants will always be listened to by a good stylist. Following the lines of the previous haircut does not count.

2. If you are having your hair coloured then choose a salon that has stylists who are highly trained in the art of colouring and tinting. A good salon will always advise that you undertake a colour ‘patch’ test before having your whole head of hair coloured.

3. There is a real difference between a salon that pushes products at you simply to increase their profits and the salon that recommends products that will be of benefit to your hair. Pushing just puts you off but a great recommendation means you will buy the product and also return to the hair salon.

4. As soon as you walk into the hairdressers you should be treated as if you are the most important client they have ever had and made to feel comfortable and welcomed.

5. Hair Stylists tend to be ‘for life’. Once you find a hair stylist you love then you won’t leave them. That’s why finding a salon where the staff turnover is minimal is important. Salons who treat their staff well will keep their staff and consequently keep their clients.

6. Trusting your hairdresser is paramount to looking and feeling good. If your hairdresser is great then she / he will know what will suit you. If you trust them then you can walk out of a salon feeling like a million dollars.

7. Hairdressers need to be able to pick up on client’s cues. Some clients really don’t want to talk whilst others are happy to chat away! A hairdresser needs to be able to pick up on client’s wishes and respect them. You will realize straight away if they aren’t taking your personal wishes into consideration.

8. The salon should house a fantastic selection of the latest gossip magazines so you can catch up with what is going on in the world of celebrity and totally switch off!

9. An amazing hair studio will never look down their nose at a client but will always ensure that everyone is welcome.

10. A great hairdresser realizes that you are coming in for more than just a hair cut. You are coming in to be looked after, to sit and be pampered, to get away from your own world for an hour and to be the centre of someone else’s attention once every 6 – 12 weeks! Welcoming salons do exist however and they aren’t necessarily the most expensive.

Choose the salon with the biggest smile and the friendliest welcome and you won’t go far wrong.
